Book Review: I know my opinion is controversial, and a lot of people I know love this book, but I just hated it. I found it boring and the main characters reminded me of a bunch of teenage girls. They were all very shallow and catty, and while I know that’s the entire point, I just couldn’t get into it.
Quotes: “Daisy and Jordan lay upon an enormous couch, like silver idols, weighing down their own white dresses against the singing breeze of the fans.” “‘Her voice is full of money,’ he said suddenly. That was it. I’d never understood before. It was full of money- that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals’ song of it.” “‘And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.'” “I wasn’t actually in love but I felt a sort of tender curiosity.”
Spoilers: One of the only things I liked about this book was the ending. It was very tragic and a great way to conclude the novel. Other than that, I didn’t love the book. I do believe that it has some good messages about moving on from the past and provides a good perspective on materialism and shallow characters. however, I didn’t find it at all entertaining and for me it was a slow, frustrating read.
